Osborne Partners Profile: Jay Skaalen, CFA, CFP®, Principal

Jay graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a Bachelor of Science degree and a dual concentration in Finance and Accounting. After graduating, Jay moved to San Diego to begin his career at Qualcomm as an analyst/accountant and later settled in with their investor relations team where he was tasked with educating both potential and existing shareholders on the merits of being a shareholder. It was in this role that Jay decided he would rather be analyzing and investing in companies than answering questions about one and soon left for the investment management industry.

After leaving Qualcomm, Jay moved north to San Francisco joining Wells Fargo Private Bank where he worked as a portfolio manager, primarily for individuals, families and small institutions. While at Wells Fargo he simultaneously served as an analyst for the national equity research team with a focus on the technology sector. Jay obtained his CFA Charterholder (the most prestigious designation in the industry) in 2012.

Jay joined Osborne Partners in 2013 seeking an organization that was more focused on serving clients and an environment where he could make a greater direct impact. He is a member of the Investment Committee and is responsible for research coverage in all asset classes. Being a competitive person, he enjoys the challenge of identifying attractive investment opportunities given the constantly changing global economic landscape.

With Jay’s hard-working attitude and vast investment knowledge, he became a partner of the firm in 2020. To broaden his industry acumen, during the pandemic, Jay obtained the Certified Financial Planner designation.

Jay lives in Marin County with his wife, Delilah, and their three sons. Though a San Diego native, Jay has grown to love the Bay Area and tries to take advantage of the outdoors as much as possible. Over the last few years, Jay began cycling in the Marin headlands and has even started doing a few triathlons each year. Jay and his wife enjoy hiking and camping throughout Northern California, as well as traveling as much as possible.
